Starter not working

Based on your description, it sounds like the starter is getting hot from the engine and then drawing too many amps from the battery. If you are seeing smoke, chances are it is melting the positive battery terminal because it is drawing so much. What to do is call a nationally recognized parts store near you and ask if they can check how many amps your starter is drawing. Then, get the car hot and stop there and have them hook up their maching to test it. My guess is you need a new starter, and this test will identify if I'm correct. Also note, many will do this for free, so there will be no money out of pocket for you.

Let me know what you find, and thanks for using 2carpros. Com

Over the past week or so I have experienced a delay in the time it takes to start my car. After putting the key in and turning the key to start, there has been an increasing delay of time it takes for the motor to turn over. Today however, my car will not crank at all.

Does this have something to do with the starter?

Yes. Its in the starter circuit and most likely is the starter motor failure. To test have someone crank engine over and check the purple wire at the starter for power, if you have power then the starter motor is bad.

Ok, I wasn't able check that away, but I did let the car sit from the time I posted the last question until now. I just went out and turned the car over and it did hesitate for about 3 seconds, but then fired right up.

Sounds like the voltage I need is there, but the starter motor is failing?

The other day I attempted to start my car only for it to make a clicking noise. It wasnt the battery nor the starter because both have recently been replaced. I attempted a couple more times and smoke started coming from under the steering column. After a closer look I noticed that there is a thick yellow wire that the casen has been melted like there is a short. What can it be?

You have a harness issue. The yellow wire could be the wire to the starter. The reason for this failure must be identified before repairing. It could be the ignition switch or the wire is rubbing somewhere causing it to short.

Not a simple repair.

Do you have a security system on this? Use a digitalmultimeter across battery posts, everything off, Make sure the battery has a full charge. The generic spec for a full charge is around 12.6 volts. Battery connections clean and tight. Check the voltage circuits at the starter, make sure tranny is in park or neutral and the ebrake is set before testing. Any applicable trouble codes?

I'm not sure I understand your question. To me cranking means the starter turning the engine when the key is turned. This is also what most mechanics consider turning over. When the starter doesn't crank the engine, the engine is either frozen, which normally requires running with no oil or something of the sort, or the starter isn't receiving power or the solenoid isn't receiving the signal to activate and cause the starter to turn.

Check to verify that the main starter power cable is properly connected and that the solenoid is receiving power when the key is turned.

Pls be patient. I'm a chick not a mechanic. So my 94 camaro decided to not start. I have replaced the key (has chip) when I turn the key all the lights come on. Battery is fine. I'm clueless what to do next. I can't afford a big repair bill. Anyone pls give tips.

Ok. "Does not crank" or "does not start"? Those are two separate things. Does it do anything when you turn the key? Click? Make a groaning noise?

Get ready to get dirty. Find the big red wire on the battery. Now follow it to the starter. Make sure all connections are tight and clean. Now smack the side of the starter with a hammer and see if it turns over. If so, replace the starter.

Engine will turn over may even start but dies after 30seconds. Then leaks oil n gas n water. Crank edit by hand turned normal until 3/4revolutiongot really stiff. Turned past it then went to normal compression, can any one tell me what might cause that

When it gets stiff and hard to turn that is the compression stroke. That's normal. For safety, you need to fix the fuel leak first as it can cause a fire. It probably also has something to do with your running problem. Start by cleaning off the engine very very well and let it dry so that you can tell where the fuel is starting from

On the igniton coil the #3 coil is not creating any spark. Will that cause the engine not to crank. It does turn over but that is all. Could that be the problem?
