With so many miles on that tranny, I wouldn't put the hours and labor into it. If you really want to know if the car is worth buying and spending money to replace the tranny, do a compression check on all cylinders (150 psi with no variation over 10 psi). This'll telly you the condition of the motor. Check the condition of the fuel filter (If it's been replaced or looks as old as the car), the vacuum lines, hoses and belts (also an indicator of maintenance). Check the condition of the brake fluid, balljoints and tierod ends.
If the car is cheap enough, the engine is in very strong and the car has been maintained, go ahead and the spend the money on a tranny (used would be the cheapest, but with under a 100K miles).
