My battery was dead. So I jumped it off. It tried to start.I turned it off then back on again smoke came out from what looked like behind the alternator. The ground cable on the booster cables. Was hot. Now I can't get my key out. Won't turn all the way to the off position. And when I turn the key to start. No lights. Nothing happens

I'd take negative battery cable loose. You need to remember, disconnecting battery can cause certain issues, an example, your security system and possibly idle relearn issues and other.

Check alternator wiring, do you see anything melted or burned, if so, replace wiring circuit and or connector. Check battery cables and wiring, do a voltage drop test, if anything questionable, replace entire cable or wiring circuit.

I don't like using jumper cables, except in case of emergency. If battery is down, use a battery charger, or take the battery off, some of the national brand auto stores, I believe, will charge and test your battery for free. Can't beat that. Some of the national brand auto stores will make house calls, if one in your community. If needed, they will replace battery right in front of your house.

I'd have to fix voltage system before worrying about anything else.
