1998 Isuzu Amigo New Battery Engine Light Just Came On Today Had Erratic

I have a new battery but the engine light just came on today and it had an erratic tachometer going from the bottom to 1200 and back and forth and even stalled out. I drove it 30 miles and the tach was fine but the check engine light is on.
