My SUV has recently refused to crank the starter motor when the engine is hot. When allowed to fully cool the motor will crank and the engine will start and run.
I have changed the bulk head starter solenoid and the problem still exists.
Could this be a dead spot on the starter motor commutator that moves on cooling?

Sounds more like a bad starter do you have a multi meter to do some testing?

Yes I do have a meter and am electrical savvy.
Voltages to the starter solenoid were OK at 12V and there is a full short across the power terminals but I havn't done any checks on the starter motor itself yet - that will be tomorrow's job and will possibly pull the motor at that time.
Thanks,
Brian

If the red wire to the starter has power and the black wire to the starter with the key in the start position then you have a bad starter.
