I am told changing spark plugs in my 1997 outback with tghe 2.5 motor is real difficult and there are some kind of seals around the plugs that need to be changed also . It does look like the car frame runs right along beside the plugs. I do smell motor oil burning sometimes after stopping . Any advise appreciated

Space is rather tight and not really easy to work on but still manageable if you have the correct tools and extensions. For leakages, the valve cover gaskets tends to be the ones causing the problem and a visual inspection should be able to tell you if they nees to be replaced.
