throttle problems

I have a 1997 Ford Aspire.I had to change the water pump.and now its ok, idles fine,and responds to pressing on the accelerater pedal when in park. As soon as i shift in to drive, the transaxle shifts in to gear then the motor stops responding to throttle. what have i done.

Did you disconnect the battery doing the water pump if so computer has to relearn its programming-due to lost of memories
