Next time it doesn't crank, observe the brightness of the head lights or dome light before and during cranking. If they go out or become dim, suspect dirty battery cable connections.
More commonly, if you hear one single kind of loud clunk from the starter but it doesn't spin the engine, (and the lights stay bright), suspect the solenoid contacts in the starter. They can be replaced for 20 bucks, but most people just replace the entire starter.
