Hello,
The check engine light typically comes on when the computer detects a fault within any of the electrical components in the engine management system. It can also be illuminated due to an issue with the Emission or EVAP system.
Any time the light comes on, the first step would be to get it scanned and retrieve the codes. As the codes will tell you the reason the light is illuminated.
You can take the vehicle to your local auto parts store and they can scan and provide you with the code(s). The diagnostic port is located under the dash on the driver side.
