Check yoru fuel pressure 60-66 psi for csi systems, that's the big black plastic intake with a huge wire loom going in middle or 56-62 psi for sfi system.

If i'm correct the 97 was one of the ones that had an intermittent fuel pump problem. The harness goes bad about a foot from the tank and casues the pump to go in and out. If you have hte connector going toyour pump and I don't know if you can see it or not, then you may have the fuel pupmp problem. However the fix is to replace the pump with a new connector that should be supplied with the new pump. Also check the resistance in the crank and cam sensors. One other thing if you have the csi system, normally a small block, check for cracked lines under the top of intake, tha has to be removed to do it. The replacement is around $300

Put a vacuum gauge on it and check for vacuum if it's 15" or below check for a clogged converter.

Then either try taking the egr off and cleaning it. You'll set a code and your fuel mileage will drop.
