Check engine light came on; repair shop said head gasket leak; didn't have $ to have them fix it; friend replaced intake manifold gasket (wasn't the head gasket), replaced mass airflow sensor, changed oil 2x, runs, but check engine light still on; flushed engine, replaced coolant temp sensor (check engine light went off), replaced thermostat, new coolant but check engine light came back on again. Starts up good but temp guage goes up to white line (not in red yet) but hoses are not hot even to touch. Can you help?

The overheating is likely the result of not bleeding the air out after replacing the thermostat. Thermostats only open in response to hot liquid, not hot air. The coolant in the engine will get real hot but if the thermostat doesn't open, none of that hot coolant will flow to the radiator.

What led you to all the unrelated parts? Have you checked for diagnostic fault codes? Many auto parts stores will read them for you for free.
