Hello, all!

I have the truck listed above XLT model with 5 speed manual transmission. With some troubles that I'm hoping you guys can help with. One night while driving to work I was on the freeway going 65 mph as I had done many, many times previously and all of a sudden I hear from under the hood a loud, clanking sound and my speed dropping from 65 down to around 40 while in motion. I've already checked and fixed one problem that I identified quickly with the ignition coils (I had to replace them both due to being not only original to the truck but very worn out and putting out hardly any spark, even with new plugs and wires). My next step is to look at the timing set and replace things as needed. The oil was changed a week before and the level was checked prior to starting the engine that night so I know the oil level was correct and at the full mark. I'm hoping you guys can help me make a more informed decision about how to proceed with further time and effort. This truck literally taught me how to drive a standard transmission so I'd like to get her back on the road ASAP.

Thanks a lot and I hope you guys can steer me in the right direction!

You're on the right track with checking the timing! That's where I would start.

Thanks a lot, BM! If that doesn't work, what else should I look into?

You should also retrieve the codes from the power-train control module, but a loud clunk says to me that it is something mechanically wrong. If there are any trouble codes we can help you with that part also!

I ran my code scanner on it before I disconnected the battery and it had no codes stored for drivetrain, but it did have random misfire codes. I'll be getting back on it in a couple of days to see where changing the timing belt and tensioner get me and I'll report my findings here! Thanks again, BM!
