96 Ford Explorer wont go into drive

I have a 96 automatic explorer it will sometimes go forward if you push hard on gas but most of the time will just sit there if in drive and pushing gas it will drive in reverse just fine im wondering if a bad shift solenoid may cause this problem or what else the problem could be

Make sure the trans fluid is clean and full. Also, if there is a check engine light or flashing OD light, have the computer scanned for trouble codes. As far as the shift solenoids, no. That wouldn't cause a problem when first pulling out. It could be several things. TCM, front pump, torque converter.
