Is my transmission shot or can it be repaired?

1996 Dodge Grand Caravan LE 3.3L has 226,000 miles and after driving the first time it goes to shift in third, rmps go up and then it locks itself in 2nd. Dealer stated codes were:
53 Gear ratio error in third
36 Fault immediately after a shift
54 Gear ratio error in forth
74 Calculated oil temp in use
Could it be the Transmission Control Solenoid or Transmission Speed Sensor?
I do almost all repairs to my vehicles, except automatic transmissions. I have taken it to 3 places. Transmission shop, dealer, and salvage yard. They all say to rebuild, but how do I know for sure? And prices range from $900 to $1500? I would be thankful for any advice.

Three shops have told you it's shot. What more do you need? We haven't inspected it so we can't know how bad it is. The gear ratio code usually indicates slipping so I would say rebuild too.
