Can I test a fuel pump for a 96 intrepid which is detached from the gas tank?
if I was to hook it up to a 12 volt power supply could I get an indication of its condition?

I only have a '97 service manual but I think the wire colors will be the same. The assembly should have four wires. Use jumper wires to connect the battery positive to the dark green / black wire and the negative to the black / tan wire.

If your wire colors are different, use an ohm meter to measure the resistance between various pairs of wires. You're looking for the pair that changes resistance as you move the float up and down. Once you've identified them, it's the other two that are for the pump.

What are the symptoms that led you to the pump?
