It could be the fuel pump relay. If you hear a clicking from this it should be very, very faint and coming from under the hood. There is a fuse/relay box under the hood. Have someone listen as you turn the key to the "ON" or "RUN" position. This is not the "START" position to turn the motor over, but where the key sits during operation. If you have to turn it to start to hear the noise it is related to the starting circuit.
The fuel pump relay primes the fuel system as soon as you run it to the on position.
The clicking noise that you hear as being a more faint noise may be a failed solenoid.
If you have a muli-meter, or you can buy one for less that $10, check the battery for 12V with no load. Then check it with the key in the start position. If it drops much at akk, the battery is bad.
You may also check the starter relay which is also in the under hood fuse/relay box.
The diagram to denote which relay and/or fuse is which is under the cover of the box.
Another problem might be the positive cable. Make sure both positive and negative cables are clean at the battery posts and are tight. Check the positive cable and make sure it is tight at the starter. The negative cable should run to the block, check it as well.
