1995 VW Jetta 4 cylinder mileage: 62,000. The central locking system does not work for the passenger side of the vehicle. When I lock/unlock the doors from the driver's side, the passenger side locks do not move. I can hear a motor turning for about fifteen seconds, leading me to believe the car is trying to lock the doors. What could the problem be?

Remove the door panel and inspect the lock mechanism for faulty or broken parts. Replacing the broken parts that you find should cure your problem.

You should have your brother disengage the locking system like I did. He went into the trunk and cut the cable. Now my car has manual locks. The locking system, from what I understand, has a vacuum component, so what you hear is the motor trying to get the air to push the locks up or suck them down. It's a doozy in cold weather because the lock will get sucked down into it's socket and stay there, and you can't get in sometimes.
