Hi, I'm looking for new tires and found tire ratings on the web. For example these web pages from different sites show tire ratings: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/surveydisplay.jsp?type=GTAS http://www.goodyear.ca/tire/eaglef1-asymmetric/
I would like to know if such tire rating numbers are based on some standard system so that the ratings on different sites are comparable. And if there is a standard, what exactly these numbers mean. All it tells me is that higher number is better but how much better I have no idea. For example the difference between 8 and 9 means what in practice?

Good luck with that! I would go with consumer experience ratings and give more weight to any negatives.

Also, to add to this, those ratings are done by the manufacturer themselves and some companies just use it as a marketing tool, especially the treadwear rating. Many are not very accurate at all.
