My trouble started when I tried to adjust the distributor. The engine soon died and I couldn't find the sweet spot. It didn't matter at the time as I was doing swap outs with the distributor components. I tried to mark its place in the engine as best I could.
The battery, alternator and starter work well.
Now I've been trying to set cylinder 1 to fire both at TDC and 10 degrees advanced and nothing seems to work. There are times when whiffs of smoke come out of the carb but it will not fire.
I've done a compression test on all cylinders and they hover around 150 psi. This is done when the engine is cold. Engine manifold vacuum flutters between 0 and 4 inches. The fuel pump registers at 4 psi but fuel flow didn't flow very far from the tee I used to hook up the pressure/vacuum guage. The spark plugs have gaps reading between 0.5 and 0.6 mm. I haven't checked if there is a spark bridging the gap but I'm getting a induction reading when I use a timing gun. I haven't had much success in using a timing light.
So engine could be starving for fuel, insufficient spark, improper timing, distributor misaligned, insufficient vacuum.
I am at a loss of how to proceed. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Please ask me questions if you feel I am missing crutial information.
Thanks,
Brendan
