This is almost always caused by a crankshaft position sensor, (crank angle sensor), or camshaft position sensor, (distributor pickup), failure. They often fail by becoming heat-sensitive, then will work again once they cool down for an hour.
There may be a diagnostic fault code stored in the Engine Computer that will indicate the circuit that needs further diagnosis. Unfortunately Nissans are about the hardest cars to retrieve the codes, but you can do it yourself. The instructions are on this page:

Keep in mind that fault codes never say to replace parts or that they're bad. They only tell which circuit or system needs further diagnosis or the unacceptable operating condition. When a sensor is referenced in a code, it is actually the cause of that code about half of the time. You also have to check for wiring and connector problems.
