If the lights don't dim, power isn't getting to the starter. To double check, try this. Have a helper turn the key to the start position while you check for power to the smaller wire on the starter. If should get 12 volts in the start position. If it does, the starter is the problem. If there is no power, check the starter relay in the relay block under the hood.
