1993 Nissan Truck Just Replaced Starter On Truck Making Awful Noise Engages

I just replaced the starter on my truck. The starter is making an awful noise when it engages, do I need to shim the starter or is there a certain way the starter has to be tightened up in order to pull it up evenly?
