There will be a leak be it external or internal but to be sure let's use this guide to help us fix it.

Engine Cooling problem
1992 Toyota Camry 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a 92 camry 4 cylinder 2.2 liter. Seems to be fine all day long in town but if I hit the freeway for awhile, as soon as I get off it starts overheating. Gets almost to the red before the fans kick on. Most of the time. I have a new water pump, new thermostat, head gaskets fine, head torques fine, and the correct radiator cap. And a new oil filter and new oil. Any insight?

So somehow that causes it only to heat up after the freeway? I can drive in town for hours and never have a problem. Also would that cause it to push all the coolant into the resovour? Cause its completely full after I have been driving.

Freeway driving will normally push more air through the radiator and the fans won't normally come on, slower city driving creates less air flow so the temp rises, if the sensor is faulty, the fans will come on far to late or not at all, so over heating will be a problem.

That actually makes a lot of sense! Thank you. The book doesn't say anything about a switch. Would it be the coolant temperature sensor?

Hi there,

No that is part of the engine management system, refer to my first post, now I can't find a pic if the installation of the switch, but I will look for a pic of the switch so you can identify it as there are I thing 3 switches in a row on the coolant inlet pipe.

Also, I think that with these systems, if the ignition is on and the thermo fan switch is unplugged the fan will run regardless of the coolant temp.

I think that one goes right into the radiator itself

Some did and some did not, Mitchell 1 says that its in the housing, but if you have one in the radiator that will be it.

Will the fans being constantly on cause them to eventually burn out? Just wondering.

Hi there,

In the short term it will not be an issue, but don't just leave it at that, down the road you will have an issue with the fan.

My camary is over heating.I first instaled a new water pump, new Thermostat. Second I put a new radiador and my car was still over heating. I was told that my power stering pump was leaking and a pressure hose also. The hose goes from the power stering pump to the radiador fan. I did notice my fan spining slow. After I replaced the pump and the hose my fan is spining fast again.I only overheated my car 3-4 times.I don't drive my car but I need my car my job depents on it. Please help somebody.(Could my thermostat be stuck because of the overheating). Why is my car overheating still.

Hi there,

I would be replacing the thermostat and checking that there is good circulation of the coolant, you can check this by running the engine with a hose in the coolant filler point and removing a heater hose just run it for a few seconds and check that it has a good flow rate.

My Camry, 1992, 6 cyl, over heats after driving about 10-12 miles. On freeway it works ok but as soon as it enters local roads with traffic signal it starts over heating. I recently replaced the thermostate but did not helped. I got my whole engine remade including gasket before 35K miles. So once it over heats all the coolant from radiator goes into the reserve and starts boiling in reserve. Eventually reserve gets full and coolant comes out from the over flow pipe. So I stop the engine and lets it cool down and when I look after 4-5 hours coolant in the reserve is almost empty. So I don;t know whether it evoprates or goes back to engine/radiator.

HI there,

I would check that the fan is working(dose yours have the hydraulic driven fan?) And get the radiator checked for any blockage, also have a head check done as these engines don't respond well to being over heated.

Sounds exactly like your timing belt tensioner going bad. It's an easy replacement. Hope you didn't lose a head gasket like I did.

So my check engine light came on a few weeks ago. At first you could not really tell why because the car was running the way it always does. Then a few days a go I went to the store and I started to hear a clicking sound when I would push the gas. I pulled up to a red light the car shut off. So I put it in park turned the key off and when I tried to turn it back on it gave me a hard time but turned on. I started to go again but I could still hear the clicking sound. I drove maybe a quarter of a mile and the car shut off again but would not turn back on. I let cool down my boyfriend came and put water and drove home. So now I have to fill the radiator and the water tank with water if I want to go anywhere. But today I did that and the car was shaking as I drove. I checked my engine oil and the oil is not cloudy and I dont see the car leaking anything. I did just replace the radiator because it cracked on me a few months ago in the cooler weather. But I just have no idea what it could be and can't afford to go to a shop right now. Any suggestions?
