92 mercury tracer, 1.9 4cyl. Can the valves be bent trying to start this when the timing belt is broke?

Mitchell 1 has a caution not to rotate engine with belt off, this would indicate that this is an interference type engine and valve damage may result in a broken belt, slip on a belt and do a comp check to make sure.
