When starting out cold, it starts out in 4 wheel drive, then once warmed up shifts in and out of 4 wheel drive on it's own, and the switches have no effect. Sometimes it switches mid driving, other times stopped at lights. It's ruining my gas mileage. When it's in two wheel drive, it is peppy and responsive, but in 4 wheel drive- which it switches in and out of a lot-- it uses gas like it's going out of style. It's a 4 door automatic 6 cylinder Explorer.

Check the wiring harness where it attaches to the 4wd actuator on the transfer case. Also, there is a 4wd relay that could be bad. Check it too. NOTE: Driving the vehicle in 4wd on a dry surface can damage the system.
