1991 Pontiac Grand Am 2.5 Litre LE.

It's a 3 year old, give or take, alternator. The belts have been replaced several times. Starting in the winter the alternator belt snapped, so both the alternator and larger serpentine belt were replaced and at the same time the third A/C only belt was simply removed(Why pay for a belt to drag a compressor that hasn't worked in 5+ years?)

After a short drive the car died, fading slowly to black and staling while watching the water temp spike. After some fiddling on the side of the road (3 seperate times actually)and jump starting the car it would run fine then over 5-10 minutes repeat, very slowly the lights would dim, fan would slow, temp would spike. Found the battery cable was almost completly off but to be safe the repair shop that did the belts the first time swapped them out again anyways.

The car seemed fine then a couple times the alternator belt squaked but then went quiet, then snapped. Third new belt installed. Then massive squeeling from both the big serpentine belt(deep penetrating squeal) then as it passed it'd start up the alternators squeel (high pitched squeal). Had the belts tightened.

Now only intermitant squealing and generally starts with the alternator's squeal. When squealing does start it's normally when I put the rear defrost on while the fan is on high, radio and headlights running. If I pop the accessories off the squeal goes away. If I turn the steering wheel hardover either direction it will cause the serpentine belt to squeal which then stops but causes to the alternator belt to squeal. They rarely ever squeel together.

I'm concerened that everytime the belts are tightened it just seems to cause the belts to prematurly snap, however, when they inspected the alternator levels they found them easily within specs and well over the min levels needed. They'd even manually rotate the differnt accesories to make sure nothing is seizing.

Any suggestions on what it could be? Or maybe just as an old car we just need to find that ultra hard to find medium between broken belts and squeeling.

If the crank pulley is equipped with harmonic damper, check the damper. It could be bad and results in slipping when there are additional load on the alternator, the belt noise indicates a possibility of that being the cause. Tightening the belt would result in it breaking.
