What would cause a loud knocking noise after running out of gas?

I ran out of gas a couple of days ago and just filled up my tank to 1/2 level. Whenever I drive and apply the gas, there's a loud knocking noise. The engine vibrates and dies if stopping. What could this be and is there any way to fix it. I've checked the fluid levels and they are fine. I've even tried to idle the van for a while to see if that would allow it to begin to run smoother. Can I get some help here?

It sounds like the two problems are not related. Can you please upload a video of the noise so I can hear whats going on it sounds like it might be a rod bearing spun.
