On those cars, there is a coil pack, which bolts onto a control module. That module is what the wire harness is plugged into. With the car simply dying like that, I would have suspected that before the coil pack. Often times when something happens to that coil pack, the car runs on four cylinders. It runs bad, but it runs.
The first thing I would look at are the fuses. I am including fuse panel information here. I would look at #17. But it never hurts to check them all. There is also a fuse block under the hood, but I cannot seem to locate the information for it, so you would have to check those blindly. Yes, it could be something as simple as a blown fuse.
You can get a spark tester (link to one posted below) and check to see if there are any sparks coming out of the coil. Or you can just take three wires off and have someone crank the engine to see if sparks will jump from one post to the next. It is a backyard trick, but it works. Just make sure to do this with posts that are right next to each other.
