Unplug the red / blue wire that is plugged onto the top of the starter solenoid near the battery. If it continues cranking, the solenoid is sticking and should be replaced. If it stops cranking, and starts up again when you reconnect the red / blue wire, suspect the ignition switch. I don't know what's in that one, but Escorts use four little spring-metal fingers that are pushed open by cheap plastic pins. When the contacts get hot, those pins melt. When they melt and become shorter, they won't turn the circuit off. If the melted plastic works its way into the contact, that circuit won't turn on. I saw both of those things happen to one switch over a period of a couple of days.
