No start condition:

Disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, cap and rotor /distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, ECM, Ignitor cam and crank sensors- Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it

Check our DIY section for information on what to check when it cranks but fails to start.

You need to find out what is missing, fuel or ignition sparks.

Engine Performance problem
1991 Chevy Lumina 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 215000 miles

Car was fine all day, I went to leave a friends house and the car had a hard time starting, once it did it acted like it was out of gas and died. I got it towed home, tried to start and it fired right up, I then gave a test drive and it died once again. The battery is just fine, got half tank of gas. I'm getting the feeling it is the fuel pump or filter. Any suggestions? Thank you

Check all possible obvious problems. Can't find what's wrong, it seems like there is no gas getting to the engine. When I spray starter fluid into the filter cavity it starts but as soon as it dries up it stops. What could possibly be effecting the gas getting into the engine. Besides the fuel pump because that was just changed three months ago along with the fuel filter. The car has plenty of charge, the spark plugs work.

Make sure the fuel pressure is within spec. Check to make sure the spark is a good hot blue snapping spark to the plugs. If the check engine light is on, have the computer scanned for trouble codes. Most parts stores will do it for free.

Engine Performance problem
1991 Chevy Lumina 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 85000 miles

Car stalled on wife on the highway. I walked down to try to get it home. Started right up and drove home no problems. Soon as I pulled into the drive it stalled. Started again and I hit the gas and it died and hasnt started since. I used a code reader and it came up with a code 43 which is either Spark timing or spark control according to the manual. I was told it could be the Electronic control module. When it stalled there was no sputtering at all. It was like I had turned the key off. Changed the fuel and air filter to play it safe. Fuel pump seems fine.

When I looked at the ECM the cover wasnt even on and the ECM itself was just laying in the bottom of where the cover should have been connected. Someone said that my particualr model had a bad track record because of where its located. Directly on top of the the fender well. I am replacing the ECM tommorrow and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions if this doesnt fix the problem. According to the local parts shops, they do not test anything under 96.

Hi:
Is the engine getting spark? Also, have you checked fuel pump pressure?

Will it crank? Is the engine froze-up? Why did it overheat? Does the radiator fan work? Do you have plenty of coolant?

1991 Chevy Lumina 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 176000 miles

have a 91 chevy lumina was running great until I changed the oil and filters took a drive and car stalled on me. Would not start for a moment ran fine. Next day went to start and would not start at all. Checked tested fuses plugs changed fuel filter. Started but ran very badly. White smoke was coming from exhaust. And smoke was coming from what apeared to be my o2 sensor. Going to open her up today to see if my head gaskets failed. What else would be recommended also checked diagnostics code said 35 but cannot locate what that is.

You may want to have a mechanic inspect your fuel line.

Check for spark (even though you replaced some parts, you may still have no sparks). Are your spark plugs wet?
Check for fuel
Check compression

If they all test okay, you could also have a bad coolant sensor preventing your car from going into closed loop.

I would check for DTCs.
