I have a 1990 van, with a 1992 engine and alternator. I have to tighten the van belt, but I am surprised by how little space there is. I really cant see how I can do it. Could you give me a detailed recipee for tightening the fan belt, please?

This engine should have a serp belt with an automatic tensioner. Is that correct?

I am not familiar with the serp belt. Can you please explain what it is? I am Norwegian and my english when it comes to terminology in certain subjects definitely has it's weaknesses.

There is one belt on the alternator. And the top bolt which holds the alternator is in a long hole, where I suppose you can adjust the tightness of the fan belt by adjusting the alternator. And I have found one more bolt on the lower side of the alternator, which I suppose I must loosen to adjust the alternator?

But it is very narrow, and I think I have to deconstruct something to find space to work?

Does your belt set up look like any of these?

No. This picture is from a 3, 1 l. Engine. Mine is 6, 2 l. Diesel. The alternator is located right behind the engine van, and it is located quite low in the "room", with a minimum of space to loosen it, and I can't really see how I can be able to adjust it to a tighter position, if I manage to unscrew the bolts. I wondered if it is some smart way to get easier to it, by deconstructing some I of the other components, but I am afraid to do anything wrong and crucial.

It's a quite ordinary alternator with regulator inside. The problem is the narrowness. And, of course, the old man that initiates a new hobby, which he under no sircimstances has the competence to carry out. So - he'll have to learn :)

If you can't get to it from the front or when the dog box is removed, try from under the vehicle.
