1989 Ford Probe transmission

The "MAN-SHIFT" light comes on after it shifts to third gear and keeps flashing. I press the button on the side of the shift knob but the light doesn't go out and it does NOT shift to fourth gear.

that is a very common issue with that vehicle and is normally caused by a faulty pulse signal generator in the 4EAT electronic transmission controller.but I would suggest that you take it to a transmission shop to be 100% sure as special tools and procedures are required to not only diagnose the failed part but to also replace it.there is a ford tsb on this issue the number is 90-4-8.
