Thought starter was bad, its like its not staying engaged long enuff to start the vehicle which is a chevy c10 350 motor, we actually got it to start once then killed the car and tried to start it again it barely engaged and started to whine so we stopped

It sounds like the solenoid is bad on the starter. Remove the starter and jump it directly with a battery to see if the armature is kicking out to engage with the flywheel. If it isn't, replace the starter.

AFTER THOUGHT:

Are you sure the flywheel isn't missing teeth?

If the starter is new and does the same thing as the old one, check to see if the flywheel is bad.

Let me know what you find.
