Everytime I push on the brakes the check engine.

Everytime I push on the brakes the check engine light blinks and the car shuts off but when it I push on the gas its fine and the check engine light isn't on anymore

Check engine light on a 1978 car? Are you sure about that?

That would be the oil pressure light. Check the oil level first and if it's OK, then you may have a problem with the oil pump.
