Knocking engine

Just started up a rebuilt 1968 Ford 170 cubic inch inline 6 engine in a 66 Mustang and has a knocking sound like rod or valves. The engine is new but has been sitting for 3 years, and never been turned over until yesterday.I pulled the oil pan and no broken parts. Before I pull the head, any suggestions?

I suggest you get a professional opinion on that noise before you take anything apart at all. There is a major difference between a rod noise and a valve noise and there are a lot of other possibilities too like a simple bad fuel pump so don't jump to any conclusions.

Found the noise to be a deformed oil pan (looks like somebody lifted the car from the oil pan and crushed it). Part of the crankshaft was actually hitting the side of the oil pan. My son listened with a stethoscope and heard it up close. Found another oil pan, installed it and knock is gone. Thanks for your reply.

Make sure whoever did that never works on the car again. That was pretty foolish.

Well, the car was a "first car" for my two teenage sons about 8 years ago. One went in the Navy, the other stayed behind and blew up the motor. They have learned their lesson about car repairs at this point. The dented oil pan could have even been from running over a big rock, who knows? Kids!
