Do I have to guess you don't have spark? What led you to the ignition coil? Is the rotor in the distributor turning? When you have an engine running problem, you have to list the engine size. At the very least, tell me if it's a small block with the distributor in the back, or a big block with the distributor and oil filter in the front. Have you checked the breaker points? The adjusting screw could be loose. The rubbing block could be worn or broken off.
Open and close the points manually and watch for a spark at the points, and coming off the coil wire. If there is no spark at either place, the condenser could be shorted or the resistor could be open. The resistor gets bypassed by the ignition switch during cranking, so if it's open, you'll have spark and the engine will run during cranking, but it will stall as soon as you release the ignition switch.
