Hi,
Quick question. Last night my wife accidentally put diesel fuel in my 2000 540i BMW. I didn't know and this morning I went to start it and it started to smoke from the back and was sputtering. That's when I found out that she put the wrong gas in. So I siphoned out as much as I could from both sides of the gas tank. And blew out the fuel line as much as I could. And put five gallons of unleaded in. So I went to start the car I noticed that oil is coming out the top of my oil filter casing. Why?

Yea, I just changed my oil and filter last month. So I know where my oil filter is at. It will come out faster when I give it gas when I rev it because it's sputtering trying to push what little bit of diesel fuel is still in there. Any ideas?

There is no fuel in there and this issue has no connection to the engine oil.

You can have an oil leak from any number of causes, but the fuel is not one of them. Check your oil level and make sure it is not overfull.

Okay, after about 10 try's it finally started. A little came out. And I checked the the oil. It was right at the max level. Now it's right in the middle of the level. And it stopped coming out the top. It's just weird because it's never done that before this situation. But thank for all your help. Saved me a lot of time and money which I didn't have to begin with. Thank you!

Perhaps the O-ring sealing the filter to the housing is in need of replacement.
