Hello -

To better assist you is your model the LS or XR7 and what is the engine size in liter?

Why did you change the starter and relay?

So if I understand you correctly..... When you turn the key to the start position... You get nothing, no engine turning over, no sound or movement other than your lights dimming?

If this is so, are you sure your battery is fully charged?

Next, please be careful when you do this, make sure the car is in park, emergency brake on. Take jumper cables and go right from the battery to the positive connection on the starter and see if the starter spins.....

Hello -

Thanks for the info... How do you know the starter was going bad?

So I did understand you correctly... When you turn the key to the start position... You get nothing, no engine turning over, no sound or movement other than your lights dimming? Is this true

Also is your battery fully charged

Please let me know what you find out when you do the test with the jumper cables.

Hello -

Thanks for the info..... That's great...I need you to be just a little more specific though on your answers.

It started with the key or - when you put the positive cable directly on the starter it started.

The next time this happens, go to the solenoid on the fender well, next to the battery and pull off the small wire on the "S" terminal. If it doesn't stop, that solenoid if bad. If it does, then the problem is somewhere in the rest of the starter circuit and will have to be troubleshooted from a wiring diagram.

Have an 89 cougar xr7 supercharged when I start it the turn signals, heat, fuel indicator, and brakes dont work, the radio has power but for some reason doesnt work ever. I have to shut the car off and turn it back on repeatedly to get every thing working and eventually it does but a few days ago I was doing that and it started fine the first two times but on the third wouldnt start and hasnt started since. It has power when I try to start it all the dash lights come on and everything but the engine doesnt crank over ( it is completly silent and doesnt seem to be trying) my cousin suggested the starter may be out? Idk im pregnant and just need this car to get to my doctor appts and work til I can save enough for something different. Help?

Hi
well first clean and tighten batt terminals at the battery. Next hold your foot on brake try to start car while moving shifter between drive reverse and neutral. Again just hold in crank position while moving shifter through the gears. What we are checking is to see if the neutral safety switch has failed. If don't start

make sure batt is fully charged 12. Volts or more, now reach up under the dash directly center of the steering coloumn grab this bulk of wires going into the coloumn wiggle these wires while haveing someone try to crank engine. This connection can become loose or corrode or even burned and cause all these problems. This connector connects to an electronic ignition switch mounted on top of the steer coloumn when you turn your key this switch has a slider switch inside of it which moves and connects several elec supply terminals. Which in turn starts your engine. Good luck if I can help please write back, Billymac

We are having problems with the car, we can start it and it runs fine, we shut it off and go back to start it and it wont start we have to wait at least a good hour or longer,
we have had the battery tested it good, we have replaced the alternator it good, we we just had the starter checked and it good.
What else is there that could be the problem
does this car have any other things we can check.
The car belongs to my 16 year old and she depends on it for school and work we cant have her out there at night wondering if her car is going to work or not.
Any suggestions will be a great help
there is nothing it almost like the battery is dead, there nothing but I can jump it and it starts just fine

"Doesn't start" can mean a lot of different things based on the symptoms. From the parts you replaced I'm going to guess the engine intermittently doesn't crank. If you hear one kind of loud clunk when the ignition switch is turned to "crank", suspect a loose nut on one of the two large wires on the starter solenoid / relay near the battery.
