Have replaced the battery, starter, alternates and the vehicle still won't charge the battery. It says check charging system. Any idea where to look? Thank you

Hi,

For the alternator to charge, it has to have battery voltage. There is a red wire on the alternator that should have 12v at all times. Locate that wire and check for power.

If there is no power, then there is likely a blown fusible link. A fusible link looks like a wire but functions as a fuse. If too much power is drawn through it, if will blow stopping power.

I attached two pics below. They are of the charging system. Note the red wire I highlighted comes straight from the starter motor. It runs through two fusible links (circled), through a current sensor, and then to the alternator. I suspect that is the issue, but we need to check for power at the red wire on the alternator first.

Here is a link that you may find helpful:

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

See pics below. Note: I had to cut the schematic in half to make it readable for you. I did overlap them so you can follow from one to the next.

Okay, there is 13.67 volts at the alternator and 13.67 at the battery. The vehicle wouldn't stay running for any period of time before, but now it has been running for 20 minutes now and appears to be okay. Well appeared when put it in gear the dash lights and headlights went out and the steering wheel was hard to move. Then I put it in park and took my foot off the brake and everything came back on. Seems to be a short somewhere. Any ideas? Thank you

Hi,

When you applied the brake, you placed an added load to the grounding system. Do me a favor. Check the negative battery cable to make sure it is clean and tight. Also, follow it to the engine block to make sure that the connection is also clean and tight. If there are additional wires from the ground to the body, do the same.

Let me know what you find.

Joe
