Got this SUV back in October, drove it for ten days and as it was being driven with cruise the rpm's revved up and then lost all gears except park. I'm no mechanic. Need ideas or help please.

Hey SHUGHES013,

Please start by checking the transmission oil level. Checking underneath the vehicle for leaks first may give you a good signal if it will be low.

The transmission oil needs to be checked with the vehicle on level ground.

With the engine at operating temperature it should be within the marks on the dipstick for the transmission.

If starting from cold and checking the level you should have fluid on the bottom of the dipstick but it will be below the marks.

The video below will show you how:

Any further questions don't hesitate to ask.

Regards, Joe

Fluid was checked. It had a little too much in it but we replaced the filter and refilled it to the proper amount. It still will not move. We also changed the speed sensors on the transfer case. Still nothing.

Hey SHUGHES013,

Great, good to know you have ruled out fluid/filter.

Can you scan for transmission fault codes please and let me know what you have?

The shifter will go into all positions but no movement in forward or reverse?

What was the condition of the old transmission fluid like? Any debris in the oil pan?

Regards, Joe

Sorry for the late post, at first it wasnt throwing a code and then just a week or so ago it threw a code stating like the throttle body or pcm so we changed those and it still wont go into gear. I'm at a loss for words. My husband is going crazy over it. Not sure what else to do. You can move the shifter yes but no movement is correct. The fluid didnt look bad, had a few shavings but nothing horrible in it.

Will the engine rev up in neutral? Also, can you check to see if the reverse lights come on? Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so we can see what's going on? That would be great. You can upload it here with your response. There is a pressure control solenoid that goes out in these cars but I wanted to see if the reverse lights work that will tell us if the gear range sensor is working.

Yep the engine is fine, it sounds like a transmission input or output shaft has broken, the engine is fine except for the tach that does not seem to follow the engine. I would start by removing the transmission case to spin the shafts to see if there is something broken, then remove the transmission and check the shafts, if everything is okay send the unit in for a rebuild or get a rebuilt unit fro the dealer which is what I recommend. Was there any noise before this happen? This video will give you an idea of what you are in for when removing the transmission. The code you have has nothing to do with the problem.
