Will no go into second or reverse

My vehicle all of a sudden wont shift into second gear, or into reverse. It'll go into second if I'm going down a hill. A whirring noise started as well when I'm in park and reverse. Not drive, 1, 2, or 3. Any ideas?

Welcome to 2CarPros. That description sounds like the sun shell in the transmission has sheared it's teeth. Common failure in the 4L60E unfortunately. Repair is a rebuild of the transmission and replacement of the sun shell. There are a couple options for better shells for that transmission if the rest of the vehicle is in good enough shape to justify the cost.
