From 55 MPH and up, the vehicle turns left or right without me turning the steering wheel?

It comes and goes, doesn't do it constantly once or twice about every 3-5 miles if you are on the highway or interstate.

Hi,

When this happens, does the steering wheel actually turn without you doing anything? If that is the case, it sounds like something in the steering linkage is very loose.

If the steering wheel seems to move without your effort, I need to know if the vehicle has variable effort steering. If it does, that could be the issue. This system is designed to give the most assist when the vehicle is stopped and the most assist is needed. When you are driving at a higher rate of speed, power assist is limited so the vehicle is easier to control. It's possible there is a sensor that is failing and providing full assist when you are over 55.

Regardless, what I suggest is this. If it does have the variable assist steering, you need to have the computer scanned for diagnostic trouble codes to determine if there is a fault. Here is a link that explains how that is done:

Also, you may want to consider lifting one front wheel off the ground at a time and placing your hands at 3 and 9 o'clock to see if there is excessive movement.

Let me know.

Take care,

Joe
