the vehicle won't come out of park unless i disconnect the small battery, then it can be shifted to reverse or drive.

Transmission will not shift out of park?

This can happen when the brake light switch stops working. I would step on the brake pedal to see if the lights are working and if not let's start by checking the fuses and if they are okay, I have left instructions in the images below to help you change the stop light switch out. If the brake light works, the shift lock solenoid is not working which I have included below as well. Check out the images (below). Let us know what happens and please upload pictures or videos of the problem so we can see what's going on.
