My van has had a wiring problem. For two years the check engine light has been on but the engine is fine. Recently, the traction light came on but nothing was wrong. The front right passenger turning signal light went out. I just had it replaced in February so, I am guessing the wiring is making it burn out. Lastly, once the light was replaced, the open door alarm is going off even though all doors are closed. It stays on while driving.
I love this van and would like to keep it but the mechanic says it will be hard to locate the problem. I just viewed your video about testing wiring and it seems pretty easy. I know you cannot really say without looking but do you think my van can be saved for a reasonable price? Or, if I get a meter perhaps I can tackle the job? I did replace the starter in my Sentra a few years ago.
I would appreciate any advice you can give me.
Sincerely,
Mary-Margaret

Good morning.

Let us start with the code. It does matter as it may be related to the wiring issue. Please post the code if you have it. If not you can have it checked at a parts store for free.

If the trac light is on, then there is a failure. the light comes on when there is a fault. It is part of the ABS system and needs to be checked. in most cases, it is the ABS module that is the failure.

Bad connections and grounds are common for the constant light failures. It may be a bad connector to the light.

The door alarm may be the switch in the door. Common considering the age and use.

Yes, it can be saved. I cannot say anything about price as we do not know the failures yet. Once I get more information, we can get to that step.

Dear Roy,
You are a beacon to my darkness! I have been so sad about my van. Okay, I will go to the parts store tomorrow and let you know what they say. I am so amazed at the thoroughness of your response. You have brought me hope and I will do my best to get my van (Monty) through this! I will also read the other responses below. Once again, thank you Roy!
Sincerely,
Mary-Margaret
