How to change wipers? The parts person at auto parts store did not know how.

Ha, yes, it is easy to do most BMW of this body style don't allow the wipers to work with the wiper part of the blade gone because it can damage your windshield. Here is a video to show you how, on a similar BMW model and I have included instructions in the images below from the manual.
