After replacing the rear shoes, hardware and cylinder one of the shoes is getting pushed too far and will not go back down?

I replaced the shoes, hardware, and cylinder for my rear drum brakes. When I took it on a test drive it started getting hot. One of the shoes is getting pushed too far and won’t go back down, what do I do?

It sounds like you got the brake shoes mixed up, there is a primary and secondary shoe and if you have it in the primary position the brake shoes have a hard time releasing. Here are diagrams in the images below to help you see how to do the job correctly, also I have marked the primary and secondary shoe which has more lining than the primary shoe.
