Why does my car shifter not stay in park?

My car does not stay in park and drive does not light up on the inside cluster but engages R.2.L if you put it in the it stays in one gear.

It sounds like you have a shift cable that is broken or stretched. I would remove the shift cable and work the selector lever on the transmission by hand, I have also seen the neutral safety switch go bad and jam up. So, this can be the issue, as well. You should be able to tell once the shift cable is removed from the transmission.
