I had just gotten my car home from a shop about a loose wire on the starter. As soon as I turned off the car, it made a very loud whirring sound. I lifted the hood, and I could see white smoke coming from behind and under the engine. After about 45 seconds, the whirring slowed to a stop and the smoke turned black, then stopped. I am not a car person at all. What on earth was that?

hard telling as we can't see it but I'd take it back if it will start because them may have screwed something up . Sounds like a fusible link burnt up prior to car catching on fire.
