I just had a new engine and a new clutch installed and now the car whines, except when the clutch is depressed. Is this serious, is it related to the new clutch, can I drive it for now?

sounds as if the clutch thrust bearing is faulty, take it back to the mechanic that installed it and get them to listen to the noise, they should be doing this under warranty if it is the thrust bearing.
