Hi,
The fuel filter is in the fuel tank and is serviced with the fuel pump assembly.
How often does this happen? I ask because a filter usually doesn't cause what you explained. If it is partially plugged, you are more likely to notice it when the engine is under a load and the fuel supply is increased.
Oftentimes, a rough idle and stalling at idle is the result of an engine vacuum leak. Have you checked for any leaks?
